CBT ADVISORY COMMITTEE BACKGROUND

New Members Welcome!

The CBT Board of Directors encourages interested individuals from the UNESCO Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Region to sign-up for membership on an Advisory Committee. Participating on these community-based Committees provides residents with an excellent opportunity to network with peers and contribute to a sustainable future for the region.

The CBT has advisory committees in the areas of Marine & Aquatic, Terrestrial, Education, Culture and Community Development.

Committee meeting

In spring 2005, the CBT Board agreed to a new approach to community consultation and engagement through the formation of five volunteer-based advisory Committees. In the establishment of these Committees the Board hopes to achieve broader community awareness of the CBT's activites, more inclusive and active participation of community members, informed input and advice on project proposals and spending priorities, and input to the annual CBT business planning process.

Membership on the Committees is determined through a public membership drive and through recruitment of local experts.

The Committees provide support and make recommendations to the Board of Directors for approval of community based research, education, training, and capacity building. A major function of the committees is to build relationships in the communities through the network of people involved and their individual networks of influence. Committees will consider and advise upon conservation, sustainable development and healthy community goals, priorities and projects from both a region-wide and a long-term perspective.

The Committees have an allocated budget for their operation and support staff to assist in their work. Limited discretionary resources are allocated by the CBT Board for each Committee to undertake research, facilitate specific projects as agreed to by Committee Members and support logistical requirements. Committees have the authority to spend discretionary resources on small or short-term research and/or projects in support of their planning and advising functions.

Any spending beyond annual discretionary allocations (e.g. major or long-term projects, or projects requiring partnerships with other organizations) requires a Committee recommendation to the CBT Board for the Board's approval. CBT staff report regularly to the CBT Board on the committees planned and actual expenditures.

The Committees will invite ex-officio positions to assist them in their work. These positions could be filled by experts or celebrity personnel who could advance the goals of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the work of the Committees.

All Committee meetings are open to the public, and meeting dates, times and agendas will be announced publicly. Meetings will be scheduled throughout the CSUBR region.
