Ahousaht Community Needs Assessment 2005

In October 2005 the Ahousaht Cultural Youth Centre Society conducted a community needs assessment, which focused on the West Coast community of Ahousaht. The purpose of the Community Needs Assessment was to review the needs for services in our area for youth and their families.

Community Organization Directory

The purpose of the Directory is to provide a comprehensive database of all of the community groups and non-profit organizations within the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Region. This booklet provides our communities with useful information about local organizations in one easy-to-use Directory.

2003 Westcoast Community Needs Assessment

In July 2003, the Westcoast Womens Resources Society (now the Westcoast Community Resources Society) conducted this Community Needs Assessment, funded by the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust, which focused on the West Coast communities of Vancouver Island including Hot Springs Cove, Ahousaht, Tofino, Opitsaht, Esowista, Ucluelet and Ittattsoo. The purpose of the Community Needs Assessment was to evaluate access to existing services, as well as unmet needs and gaps in services in this geographic area. Although each community has its own concerns and needs, there are several needs, such as adult education and affordable, healthy housing that are of concern to all of our communities on the Westcoast.

2003 Clayoquot Symposium Proceedings

The Clayoquot Symposium 2003: Citizen Science and Community Health, was held in Tofino, British Columbia from November 25-28, 2003. The general theme of the conference was health across the water, which was be explored through four days of discussions between community members and invited guests. The main activities of the conference were informal panel presentations and large group discussions.

Clayoquot Land Use Decision

For years, the wealth of natural resources and wilderness values in Clayoquot Sound resulted in long-term conflict over resource uses. In 1993, the B.C. government made a land use decision for the Sound that sought to ensure environmental protection and the economic health of local communities.

1995 Clayoquot Sound Scientific Panel Recommendations

To review forest practices standards and ensure that forest stewardship stood up to world scrutiny, the provincial government set up an independent Scientific Panel for Sustainable Forest Practices in Clayoquot Sound in 1993. The panel, which included First Nations resource management experts and leading scientists, made its final recommendations to government in 1995. The provincial government accepted the panel's recommendations and has fully implemented them.
